Introduced at this year’s Watches and Wonders by Arnold & Son, the new Ultrathin Tourbillon Gold represents a pure example of the brand’s design code that willingly omits frills and complex aesthetics. The watch joins a collection of models renowned for their ultra-thin flying tourbillons and certainly maintains that standard with its own slender mechanism. With a vital opaline dial, an energetic tourbillon, and a red gold outer case, the Ultrathin Touribllon Gold is a fusion of the technical prowess of the manufacture via a discerning design.
Creating a warm exterior is a slim 5N red gold case with a moderate diameter of 41.5mm. It has a modest height of just 8.3mm, a feat that contributes to the delicacy of its design. The case is understated in its design, lending itself to frame the dial and as well as display the movement via an exhibition caseback. Though this is certainly not the typical water-wearing watch, Arnold & Son does ensure that the case is water resistant up to 30 meters. Securing the watch via slim lugs is a hand-stitched blue alligator leather strap with a black lining and folding clasp.
The dial itself is vast, though its functional layout is marked by two distinct apertures, each occupying its own off-center segment of the dial. At the 12 o’clock position is the time indicating subdial, which maintains a minimally elegant design with thin, black roman numerals. Ticking atop are blue, arrowhead hour and minute hands that introduce a burst of color to the design. At 6 o’clock, an open window displays the tourbillon and reveals glimpses of the hidden elements of the movement. Both the hour dial and the tourbillon window are encircled in the same 5N red gold used for the case, introducing a repetitive geometry and symmetry throughout. Creating a pristine backdrop is an almost lunar-like opaline main dial with a dynamic silver-toned finish.
Powering the watch is the caliber A&S8300, which has the accolade of being one of the slimmest movements ever designed at just 2.97mm thick. The tourbillon carriage has been redesigned for the movement, this time sporting a triangular shape with a double-arrow counterpoise. The carriage completes a full rotation in one minute, measured via its middle point, which doubles as a seconds marker. For such a slim movement, and a tourbillon no less, the movement is capable of an impressive power reserve of 100 hours.
The Arnold & Son Ultrathin Tourbillon Gold is limited to 88 examples with pricing marked at CHF 70,000 (approximately $76,200).
