In 1965, Seiko launched its first diver’s watch, which was also Japan’s first ever diver’s watch. With an automatic movement and water resistance to 150 meters, it proved its reliability when it was used by a team of Japan’s Antarctic research expedition from 1966 to 1969.
Now Seiko introduces a new edition of this pioneer in the Prospex collection, known among fans as “62MAS”. The design and 38.5mm diameter of the Seiko Prospex 1965 Diver’s Re-creation Limited Edition are almost identical to the original, while the technical specifications have been updated.
The watch is powered by the new caliber 6L37, the first movement in the slim 6L series, which was developed specifically for divers. It boasts the same accuracy (+15 to -10 seconds per day) and power reserve (45 hours) as the proven 6L35 caliber, which is the mainstay of the 6L series. However, thanks to design and material modifications, its durability and shock resistance now meet the stringent requirements of a Seiko Prospex diver’s watch.
While the appearance is almost identical, the Seiko Prospex 1965 Diver’s Re-creation Limited Edition is equipped with the modern-day achievements of the traditional Japanese manufacturer. These include a domed sapphire crystal and a water resistance of 200 meters. While inspired by the original, the bracelet is made of durable silicone for added durability and comfort. To improve readability in low light conditions, the hands and markers, including the one next to the date window and the dot on the unidirectional rotating bezel, are coated with Lumibrite.
The 1965 re-creation will be available starting in August 2023. Its production is limited to 1,965 pieces worldwide and comes in a box inspired by the 1960s. Pricing for the Seiko Prospex 1965 Diver’s Re-creation Limited Edition is marked at approximately $4,000 when converted into USD.
