Earlier this year, Seiko introduced the King Seiko, which was first marketed in 1960 and revived in 2021, in a new model generation with a smaller case diameter of 38.5mm and a svelte height of 10.7mm. Now, the Japanese watch giant adds a beautiful new execution distinguished by a delicate floral pattern inspired by the chrysanthemum as an homage to Tokyo where the King Seiko watch was born.
A symbol of longevity and rejuvenation, the chrysanthemum is highly significant in Japanese culture. On the dial of the newcomer it is brought to life by a pattern of finely intersecting lines known as “kiku tsunagi-mon,” which means a “chrysanthemum pattern connected to itself” in Japanese. This pattern follows the tradition of Edo-kiriko glassware, a form of traditional glass cutting that is considered a popular craft of Japan. “Edo-kiriko”, meaning “faceted objects from Edo”, is known for its intricate beauty and unique designs achieved by skillfully cutting multiple facets.
As is characteristic of King Seiko, the polished stainless steel case is faceted with large flat surfaces and sharp angles. With a diameter of 38.1mm and a height of 11.4mm, it is water resistant to 50 meters. Beating inside is the automatic caliber 6L35 with 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 45 hours. It features Seiko’s Magic Lever which improves the efficiency of the winding system.
The Seiko King Seiko ref. SJE095 will be available in the brand’s boutiques and at select retailers worldwide from October 2023 in a limited edition of 600 pieces. In addition to the metal bracelet, Seiko will supply it with a color-coordinated leather strap. Pricing is marked at approximately $1,600 when converted to USD.
