Sinn Spezialuhren presents a new generation of its iconic Navigation Chronograph series. Equipped with a slide-rule bezel for calculations, it is available in three dial colors: black (903 St II), dark blue (903 St B E II) and light blue (903 St HB). The latter is a limited edition of 500 pieces, while the first two are part of the standard collection.
The name Sinn Spezialuhren needs little explanation among fans of function-oriented tool watches. The German brand, based in Frankfurt am Main, is widely known for its instrument-like timepieces, which are designed to operate reliably in challenging situations thanks to many useful and intelligent in-house developments and technologies that, for example, enhance the scratch-resistance (Tegiment Technology) or prevent fogging (Ar-Dehumidifying Technology). Therefore, some elite forces, such as firefighters, rely on their mission timepieces, which are aptly dubbed “EZM” which means “Einsatzzeitmesser” in German and translates to mission timepieces.
The Navigation Chronograph 903, which cannot hide its similarity to the Breitling Navitimer, occupies a special position in its collection and also has an interesting story to tell. The founder of the brand, Helmut Sinn, once secured the rights to it during the so-called quartz crisis and at the same time bought up the machines and the remaining stock from Breitling. The 903 was never a copy, but a model in its own right, even after the reintroduction of the legendary Navitimer by Breitling’s then CEO Ernest Schneider.
Now, Sinn has released a brand new version of this pilot’s chronograph called the 903 St II that, first of all, features the same tricompax-dial layout with silver-electroplated counters as its predecessor, the date indication between 4 and 5 o’clock, and, of course, the slide-rule bezel with a circular scale located on the inner flange. It can be rotated in either direction, allowing you to perform various calculations related to time, speed, distance, fuel consumption. Its practically a calculator you can operate on the fly while wearing the watch on your wrist.
By integrating the luminous pigments into the respective hybrid ceramic molded part, a high concentration of luminous material is achieved. The result is an intense brightness and perfect readability in the dark.
The stainless steel case measures 41mm wide and 14.5mm thick and is equipped with a sapphire crystal case back and mushroom-style push pieces. Its water-resistance has been increased to 200 meters, which testifies to the technical prowess of the brand.
At the heart of this high-flying newcomer is the self-winding L110 caliber from La Joux-Perret. This chronograph movement beats at 4 Hz, is equipped with a column-wheel mechanism and has a power reserve of at least 60 hours when fully wound. It boasts a personalized oscillating mass with Geneva Waves and a high finishing quality including perlage and blued screws.
The Sinn 903 St HB with a light blue sunburst dial is available with either a leather strap or bracelet and retails for 3,650 Euros or approximately $3,970 when converted to USD. The non-limited watches are priced at 3,250 euros or $3,530 when converted to USD. In addition to leather and solid bracelets, you can also choose a silicone strap.
